In the interest of trying to keep this LJ interesting I'm going to make an effort to write a little about the books and movies I read/watch.

I just finished reading A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews.

It's a about a young Mennonite (no need to adjust your glasses [livejournal.com profile] bona) girl trying to survive in a small Manitoba town in the midst of religious fundamentalism, burgeoning sexuality and grief over the disappearance of her mother and sister.

(Disclaimer: I know I'm not very good at writing book reviews but be assured that if I'm taking the time to write about them they're well worth reading/watching. Just trust me. Besides if you get the book for free from your local public library like you should, it won't cost you a red cent to read it)

Next up on the reading list: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
Currently listening to the audiobook of: The Last Season: A Team in Search of Its Soul (Dirt on Kobe and Shaq!)
Next movie to watch: Hero

I'm on the lengthy list for Gilead. have you read Housekeeping?

I liked Hero, a visual treat.

Not to be confused with Hero, also a great movie.

The Last Season - is that the one by Phil Jackson? I just finished it. I won't give away too much, but it came as no surprise which of the two (Shaq v. Kobe) came away looking worse...

They did a week-long reading of Complicated Kindness on CBC Radio One several weeks ago. So far, it's the only reading I've heard in the past year which didn't reek of making me want to kill them, so I should probably get the book.
