Shapiro's Deli on the south side of Indianapolis is an old, traditional eating place in Indy, well worth the visit. If you go to the Athenaeum in downtown Indy, order the Hot Brown.
If you're willing to travel an hour south to Bloomington, you can sample all kinds of great eating: the Dalai Lama's brother owns a Tibetan restaurant here, Janko's Little Zagreb is the most amazing steakhouse I've ever eaten in, the Samira is authentic Afghan food, there are some very nice microbrew pubs, etc. etc.
