Firefighters and police are trained to deal with the stresses that their jobs undoubtedly entail; librarians and school teachers are less likely to have these support systems in place

You know, I think that's a very good point. Dealing with the stress of your job, no matter what it is, is personal and important. You may LOVE the basic concept of what you do, but if you can't deal well with the stress of it, you're going to end up hating your job.

And I say this as a well-misplaced office worker.

Huh, that's really interesting! The librarians I know either love or hate their jobs...there isn't any inbetween. Then again, the one I know best, who absolutely loves her job, is brand-new at it and so probably hasn't learned to hate it yet ;-) tee hee

Which brings up an interesting point...can anyone truly love their job? I always wonder that. My friend Brian got his dream job here and you know what? He whines about it!

I'm often surprised not to see journalism listed among stressful jobs, but then again, I think we're all just gluttons for punishment. Who else would work these crazy hours, doing crazy things and be so hated for such rotten pay?

People with masochistic tendencies immune to stress, that's who.

I understand the stress, completely. But I don't understand the reasons why? Ther librarians I work with certainly aren't stuck between the stacks. Instead they are stuck babysitting children who are left unattended, ordering movies for customers, nothing but movies, dealing with an administration that doesn't understand the demographics of the different branches in the system and many more. Repetitive tasks? Stuck between shelves of books? I'm not getting that.
