i like michael stipe. what bono has, rather than the gift of a beautiful voice (no matter that the edge named him Bono Vox, meaning good voice, if i have the story right), is passion. he wobbles when he sings, but he sings with total conviction.
joseph arthur doesn't have a great voice, either. it's all in his intelligence and his nutty creativity. a beautiful voice isn't necessarily one i can love. y'know?

The Call was my gateway to VOL as well...went to see The Call, and Bill and the boys were opening (Struggleville tour).
Great band. Michael's solo album, "On the Verge on a Nervous Breakthrough" is worth having as well...
