I whine about making that trip in a CAR. I grew up down there and my parents still live there. Not Joliet proper, but unincorporated Plainfield Township.
(But, for the record, Route 53 is prolly their best bet as far as surface roads, I imagine...not that there's a really good way, but, you know. Just tell them to be aware of the jog it takes in Romeoville!)
